JC Deming: It’s not so much the visual impact of the ships’ bulk. It is the inevitable accumulated small, continuous fuel, oil, grease seepage. But far more serious than this is the little addressed problem of night light. Not only is this a health hazard for people, it is deadly for our bat population (which is already severely stressed). If our local bats are an endangered species, the problem with bright lights alone should be enough to stop this increased anchorage.  We must bring back the natural night darkness to our water ways as much as possible.
