Local leaders decry plan for more Hudson River barges

News12 Westchester: Local leaders are decrying a plan by the federal government to allow more commercial barges to dock on the Hudson River.

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano was joined by a group of Hudson Valley politicians to rally against the plan by the U.S. Coast Guard to allow commercial barges to be anchored in the river from Yonkers to Albany. The plan calls for permanent anchor spots along the way to Albany, but the largest would be in Yonkers.

While just a proposal, local leaders, who formed the Hudson River Waterfront Alliance, are already raising health, safety and environmental concerns against it.

Spano is encouraging the public to sign his online petition to ban the barges. He says the group of leaders is consulting a law firm to help determine their next steps.  Read more.
